My introduction to Baroque painting came by way of prints between pages in a grandmother’s bible. From there some captivating works took residence in my mind, awaiting attribution. Many years later through art history readings, Nicolas Poussin and Caravaggio emerged as my icons of the period. Meanwhile from cursory readings of philosophy it seemed Plato wasn’t wrong about the forms. They idealistically pre-exist all of our art and construction, manifested as logical or sculptural descriptions of shapes, hues, and the illuminated arrangement of a still-life for example.
‘Amorphosis’ denotes for me an existential and dynamic freedom of the forms, unbounded by perceptual constraints of a human mind. See the painting realised here.
